Something Good in the World is registered as a nonprofit organization in Hawai’i in addition to New York, operating as a public charity under section 501(c)3 of the IRS code.

Our work in the district of Ka’ū, on Hawai’i Island, includes free farm-based and garden-based education programs for pre-K through Grade 10, collaborating with the Volcano School of Arts & Sciences, the Tutu and Me Traveling Preschool in Na’alehu, the Pahāla Elementary School, the Na’alehu Elementary School, the previous Ka’ū Learning Academy, and the South Hawai’i (Big Island) Homeschool Hui.  Something Good in the World is also a member of the Hawai’i Island School Garden Network.

Thanks to a grant from the Kōkua Hawaii Foundation, the Volcano School of Arts & Sciences is in the process of designing and planting their own Ka Mala Maluhia (Children’s Peaceful Garden) during the school year of 2020/2021, under the guidance of SGITW and Program Director Barbara Sarbin.

SGITW Program Director Barbara Sarbin represents the Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots & Shoots Program in Ka’ū as a volunteer Garden Ambassador, to help schools establish their own gardens with Roots & Shoots Mini Grants.  Her educational programs and projects in Hawai’i draw from trainings and certifications with the CTAHR Master Gardener program from the University of Hawai’i, the Edible Schoolyard Project, the Farm-Based Education Network, and the Farm to Keiki initiative.

Something Good in the World receives funding for these free educational programs from individuals and foundations, and welcomes contributions to be able to continue to offer nature-based and arts-integrated workshops for children, teachers, and families in Ka’ū, to assist with the movement towards food justice, sustainability, and permaculture on the Island of Hawai’i.
